Vertical Platform Lifts and the Stairs

Today, there are many places that a person with a scooter or wheelchair can go. These vehicles have greatly improved mobility since the first electric vehicle of mobility in the early 1950s, but there are some obstacles that still stand in their way. The main obstacle may be more difficult for an individual who uses a mobility vehicle to overcome is the ladder. In particular the stairs at home, because, at least in the United States, requires most public spaces to be accessible to people using mobility scooters.

Not being able to use the stairs at home is unacceptable, however, so a good number of people choose to use the vertical platform lifts at home. These devices are very similar in many respects to have its own lift, but unlike an elevator, usually there is no need for any major home modification. This is due to a vertical platform lift is mostly completely self contained.

Although there is generally no need for any modification of the house, and certainly not anywhere near the amount needed for an elevator, you need a very strong and solid base. The base must be built from wood or concrete and the vertical lifting platform shall be securely bolted to the base.

There are few lifts available that do not need to be bolted to the floor. These elevations are called portable vertical platform lifts, as they are designed to be downloaded and setup quick and easy. These elevators are not able to bear much weight though. They are very popular in schools because there is often a need to provide temporary access to the stage. In general, unless the intention to move regularly and specifically need this functionality, it is better to go with a semi-permanent normal vertical platform lift.

These devices are sometimes called elevator lifts for wheelchairs or porch. The reason they are called porch lifts is that they are more commonly installed on a frame houses, but in some cases can also be used in domestic situations. In most cases however, so far in residential settings, are used outdoors.

Porch lifts are done in a way that makes them very resistant to even the harshest elements. All components are carefully sealed and the metal is covered with a corrosion resistant housing. Despite being able to withstand most types of weather, do not want to jeopardize it. Always trim the branches that hang over the lift. Thus if a severe storm, not the risk of a fallen branch in the lift and damage or stop using it.

If the gantry crane is installed on a ledge, is a good idea for the manufacturer to ensure that there is something installed to prevent excessive water falling into it. Commonly gutters are installed, if not already present. Not only is it important to protect the elevator, but the soil around it. You do not want to constantly have to fight their way through mud to reach the elevator, thus ensuring the channels extend beyond the lift.

The mobility of the vehicles use, need not worry about the stairs, especially down the stairs around your own home. Consequently, many people choose to use a vertical platform lift.
